Il corpo mistico di Matteo Renzi / The ‘mystic’ body of Matteo Renzi

The ArtVerona 2012 art fair has been an opportunity to show a Spazi Docili [Docile Spaces] aesthetic practice which is gradually turning into a series of works.
We are convinced since a long time - see the procession of the St. Ursula statue or the actions with silicone ex-votos - that the languages of the sacred, if not trivialized, can be fruitfully uncanny and convey a sense of otherness in a public context.

After a long discussion the work to show in Verona took the form of a relational installation focused on the ‘mystic’ body of the Italian politician which more than anybody else in the last times seemed to have miraculous virtues: the Mayor of Florence, Matteo Renzi.

It was essential for us to produce a work which COULDN’T be univocally considered as positive or negative, exalting or criticizing. We wanted to preserve the complexity of the relation and interpretation which every citizen, elector and art enthusiast has towards the (Italian) political class.
That’s why we represented Renzi as it’s usual to represent Madonnas or Saints in the Southern/Mediterranean part of Italy: the sole face (as in icons) cut out in a very ‘evident’ fabric which covers the rest of the body, the ex-votos – per grazia ricevuta: to thank for a received grace – anarchically arranged all around and shining and the inevitable cheap golden frame.
lyhi ia ricevuta: grace - y, y,

We relied on the fact that this image, even if strongly celebratory (seeing that we compared Matteo Renzi to a Saint or to the Holy Mary bearer of graces), wouldn’t be perceived as such in the Northern part of the country and therefore that it would be able to highlight what we were interested about: the relationship of the observer with the ‘miraculous’ body of the Powerful Man/Saint.

We didn’t have to wait for reactions: a lot of people friendly to Renzi approached our stand praising us because we were able to give form to the hope which he embodies, in their opinion. In the same way a lot of people unfriendly to Renzi approached our stand praising us because we were able to give form to the anxiety which he embodies, in their opinion.

All this confirmed we were able to apply aesthetic languages to create a relational dispositif able to be interpreted even in completely opposite ways, depending on the feelings of the observers. A dispositif able to generate glances, discussions and confrontation.

The use of 'political materials' revealed also what kind of relationship with the real an art fair audience is willing to grant to the visual arts. What is the role of art? Art can seriously interfere with social-political-economic dynamics or should consist of extra luxurious handicraft for the upper classes?

The evident disapproval or dismayed astonishment of a part of the observers (combined with a likely misunderstanding of the symbolism of the sacred) clearly divided the audience between enthusiasm and reprobation, as we hoped.
Spazi Docili [Docile Spaces] believes that art should not be a reassuring lollipop able to unite the observers in a harmless pleasantness, but a dispositif able to divide and to force people to take sides.
