La sottile linea di confine tra cultura e intrattenimento / The thin boundary line between culture and entertainment

Più volte in questi mesi ci è capitato di assistere a dibattiti sul tema della cultura e della produzione artistica a Firenze e di frequente abbiamo ascoltato frasi particolarmente interessanti, ripetute con una sicurezza granitica, come: "Non è l'assessore alla cultura o l'istituzione in quanto tale a decidere la vita culturale di una città". Ci siamo chiesti quale sia il significato profondo di un'affermazione così sibillina e al tempo stesso perentoria.
La parola cultura in effetti può risultare vaga come vaga è la sfera dei significati dei termini arte, creatività, e l'elenco potrebbe continuare. In questa fumosa nebbia però, temiamo che a Firenze il concetto di cultura possa scivolare pericolosamente verso una concezione intrattenitiva e passiva. Infatti, se la parola cultura ha in sé una radice attiva, relativa al produrre, l'etimologia della parola intrattenimento indica chiaramente il tenere buoni, il sedare, il tenere a bada, il trattenere.
Oggi a Firenze ci sembra assai più necessario agire, che non creare o rianimare (vedi foto allegate dell'anfiteatro del Parco delle Cascine) nuove location dove realizzare l'ennesimo concerto e/o spettacolo teatrale (ovviamente con bar annesso), o aprire spazi in stile caffé letterario. Attività dal profilo comunque commerciale e spesso alla moda solo per qualche anno prima di sparire nel nulla.
Sarebbe il caso di riflettere maggiormente sulle reali necessità di questa città, magari indagando gli spazi dei quartieri e la gente che ci vive, scommettendo sulla produzione di significati dall'interno.
Una vera sfida, ad esempio, potrebbe essere la creazione di una struttura per micro-residenze per artisti, curatori, critici, provenienti da tutto il mondo, per dar loro la possibilità di confrontarsi con le controparti di un territorio e di una città unici. Un luogo aperto con laboratori, talk e project rooms per mettere in cantiere idee e interventi che sostengano dal basso lo sviluppo culturale di Firenze.

In the last months Spazi Docili [Docile Spaces] attended various meetings about art and culture in Florence. Quite often we heard very interesting sentences, repeated without any doubt, such as: "It's not the town councillor for culture or its office who has to decide the cultural life of a city". We tried to figure out the true meaning of a such cryptic but authoritative sentence.
The word culture is elusive indeed, as well as the meaning of words such as art, creativity and so on. We fear that this elusiveness could be the leading way to turn the idea of culture into passive entertaiment. The world culture is connected to activity, to production. The etymology of the word entertaiment, instead, is closer to the idea of keeping at bay, sedating, restraining.
We think Florence today needs action, not just the opening of new or old spaces - in the photographs: the Cascine Park amphitheatre - to use for the umpteenth concert or theatrical performance (where to sell alcohols, of course) or for a literary café. Commercial activities, anyway, which usually last only for a couple of years.
It would be better to think a little bit more upon the real needs of this city, examining the city districts and the people living there, betting on a local production of meanings.
A real challenge, for instance, could be the establishment of an art center for micro-residencies for artists, curators, critics from all over the world to let them meet with artists, curators, critics of an unique place like Florence. An open space with workshops, talks and project rooms where to develop new ideas and renew the culture of this city starting from the grassroots.
